When certification is required

Not every translated document needs to be certified. But when it does, using an uncertified translator can mean a document is rejected outright. Court filings, official certificates (birth, marriage, academic, criminal record), notarised contracts presented in foreign proceedings, and immigration documents typically require a sworn translator. Internal corporate documents and contract reviews for negotiation purposes usually do not.

If you are unsure whether your document needs certification, describe the document type and its intended use when you contact us. We will advise whether certification is required and whether additional steps such as an Apostille are needed before the document will be accepted by the receiving institution.

Working with Spanish courts, notaries, and registries

Our certified translations are produced by translators registered with the Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores, Unión Europea y Cooperación. We work regularly with clients at courts, the Registro Civil, the Registro Mercantil, public notaries, and government offices across the Canary Islands and mainland Spain. Documents translated and certified by registered sworn translators are accepted directly without additional authentication in standard Spanish legal and administrative proceedings.

For the Canary Islands specifically, we handle a high volume of legal translation for property purchases, inheritance proceedings, business registration, and immigration processes. If your matter involves the courts or registry in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria or Santa Cruz de Tenerife, we are familiar with the local requirements.

EU cross-border legal translation

EU Regulation No 1215/2012 (Brussels Recast), EU succession law, and cross-border civil and commercial matters often require translations that will be accepted in multiple jurisdictions. We translate documents for use in German, French, Dutch, Italian, and other EU courts and can advise on whether additional steps are required in the target jurisdiction.

For documents that will be used in non-EU countries, requirements vary significantly. A sworn translation accepted in Spain may need an Apostille to be valid in another country. We will flag this proactively when it applies to your document.

Confidentiality in legal matters

Legal documents are confidential by definition. All translators on legal projects sign NDAs before accessing files. Project documents are stored securely and deleted from our systems 30 days after delivery. We do not share, retain, or use legal files for any purpose beyond completing the translation. Confidentiality agreements for clients are available on request.
